Comes from the Gaelic and means 'Noble, strong, virtuous'. Has always been popular in Scotland as a boy's name.
'Monty Python's The Life of Brian' ( a 1979 comedy film about a man mistaken for the Messiah) probably did not help in the popularity ratings..Since the 1980s the name Brian has dropped out of the Top-10 and is currently only just remaining in the Top-100 boy's names.
