Information:
Stornoway Half Marathon (from the website)
The Stornoway Half Marathon is no ordinary race. We offer a superb course,
the second half of which is off-road, around the beautiful wooded grounds of
Lews Castle. Runners who wish to return to the mainland on the Saturday may
do so on the afternoon ferry to Ullapool, although there is now also a
Sunday sailing. There are also Sunday flights from Stornoway to the
mainland. For those who want to stay for the weekend, we offer a ceilidh
dance on the Saturday night and the opportunity to relax in Hebridean
fashion on the Sunday. Why not try something different and come to
Scotland’s north west fringe for a very special race package.
The
course is partially on gravel paths and is unsuitable for wheelchairs. The
route will be marked at one mile intervals. From the start at the Lews
Castle College, the first half of the race continues through the main street
in Stornoway town centre, and then onto Lower Sandwick bay and back towards
the Lews Castle Grounds, which is an "off-road" section run on gravel paths.
The section of the route up Willow Glen has two narrow bridges. At the first
one, the path is narrow for approximately 40 metres. From then the drives
through the grounds take over and pass the Lews Castle, through the woods
and past the Creed Lodge. At this point runners briefly exit the "grounds"
onto the Harris road, and turn left onto the Arnish road and then re-enter
the "grounds". Runners follow down the river and along the shore road to the
finish at Porters Lodge arch.
