Scottish Marathons and Ultra Marathons . . . some of the most exciting and challenging races from around Scotland.

Name of Race: Clyde Stride

Location: Partick to Lanark

Distance: 40 miles

Month Held: July

Number of Participants: 100

Website:  Clyde Stride

Information:

Part of the Montane Scottish Ultra Marathon Series of nine independently organised Scottish Ultra Marathons that form a season-long championship. : Series Website

The “Clyde Stride” provides the opportunity to race along one of Scotland’s most beautiful and accessible new pathways the Clyde Walkway. It runs from Glasgow (near Partick Railway Station) along the Clyde through Strathclyde Regional Park, the Unesco World Heritage Site at New Lanark, and the Falls of Clyde Nature Reserve to finish at Bonnington Linn. The superb track and scenery ensure a rapid rise to Ultra stardom for the “Stride”. The race has a limit of 100 and quickly oversubscribes so get in quick.

There are maps and information on the Clyde Walkway at the Visit Lanark website: Clyde Walkway - but be warned if you do this on your own - the Walkway signposts are non existent or, where there are signs, very confusing.

I ran the race in it's first year, 2010, and would thoroughly recommend it to first time Ultra Runners and seasoned Ultra Runners. The course is fairly flat for the first 40k but is undulating after that - there are steps at a number of points. The camaraderie  between runners was excellent - you just don't get that at most marathons - I had super chats with so many friendly people along the way it made the miles seem just a little bit shorted. The organisation was excellent - with 3 Check Points along the way where you could have food, drink etc taken to -everyone involved was very friendly and helpful. The t-shirt is brilliant - I will wear nothing else (apart from trousers of course) for the next month.

The one problem was, that even though the organisers had placed additional signposts and markers, there were still a number of points where it was unclear which way to go - probably more than half of the runners did additional miles. I am sure this will be fixed out for future events.

So sign up today for the next Clyde Stride - you will love it.

(( WARNING MOAN AHEAD ::: On a personal level I most rather annoyed that the organiser got my time wrong by some 8 minutes and despite promises to correct this they never did. I appreciate that in the big scheme of things this is pretty unimportant - but I had charity money that was dependant on the number of points I got - the 8 minutes put me ahead of two other runners - gave me extra points and thus more money would have been raised.))

You can always stop for a rest at Strathclyde Park . . .
