Probably
the most prestigious race in Scotland! The object is simple (if somewhat
difficult), you start at Milngavie Railway Station (7miles north of Glasgow)
and run/jog/walk to Fort William Leisure Centre. You are allowed 35 hours to
cover the 153km (95 miles) including 4499m (14760ft) of ascent. Along the
way you must pass through checkpoints within time limits. In order to
participate you must have your own motorised backup, consisting of at least
two people, one of which must be capable of covering the last two sections
with you or find you if assistance is required. If that were not difficult
enough, there are some six million midges along the way who will try their
best to block your progress - so do not attempt this race without taking
'Skin So Soft' - the ultimate midge repellent.
The
West Highland Way
Scotland’s first official long distance route links Milngavie to Fort
William – a distance of 153 km (95 miles) - from the northern outskirts of
Glasgow, to the foot of Ben Nevis at Fort William.
The Route passes through Mugdock Country Park, follows the shores of Loch
Lomond, passing Ben Lomond, through Glen Falloch and Strathfillan, crossing
Rannoch Moor, past Buachaille Etive Mor to the head of Glencoe, climbing the
Devil’s Staircase, descending to sea level to cross the River Leven at the
head of Loch Leven before entering Lairigmor and Glen Nevis.
